Before taking EDDL classes and learning about the multitude of online teaching and learning formats, my only definition came from experiences in my own classroom. To me, online teaching and learning was the times that I used computers in class to teach various concepts and having students do research online, using sites such as Khan academy, Youtube or interactive sites such as Gizmos. To me this was teaching and learning online. I hadn’t taken an online class and was never sufficiently proficient on the computer to set up my D2L site like an online learning class for kids who miss instruction or simply preferred an online format for their learning. I’ve always had a philosophy during my teaching career where building strong relationships with students was the most important function in them having success in my classroom. However online teaching and learning seems to turn that thinking on it’s head. These courses have opened up my mind to other ways of looking at education and the role of the teacher and student. I tend to be more of a traditionalist but I do have more of an open mind these days.
