Week 7 Learning Activity 3 – Five Stage Model

The two models are similar in the sense that they are both dealing with facilitating on online learning experience.  They are both concerned with developing a deep and meaningful learning experience for their students.  They seem to differ in their approach to how the learning will take place.  In Salmons five stage model there seems to be a significant emphasis on establishing interpersonal relationships between instructor and students as well as encouraging interactions between students.  I remember in one of my first blogs for this course I was talking about the importance of developing relationships with students and this was the key to my success as a teacher.  I din’t see how this could be done in an online format.  Well, now I see the framework and I can see the importance of developing these relationships and how it is also critical to online education.  It is just harder to do online because you are at a bit of a disadvantage with very little or no face to face contact.  You also get students who don’t by in to the social interactions and this can lead to diminished experience in the online environment.  This, being the third online course I have taken and the first on how to teach online, I have at times been a model of the student who doesn’t like to interact online with other students, but I am now beginning to see the importance of it and how it can make the learning experience much more rich and satisfying.  The Salmon model has obviously been used to design this particular class because there is a heavy component of interaction between students.  When I signed up for the class I cringed at the thought of doing an group online assignment and I was thinking about it in a negative light.  Now, even though I’m doing the assignment by myself, I am slowly coming around to the importance of this the focus on social interaction and I can now see how it can be facilitated.  Something that makes online learning harder to facilitate is the fact that all students in class all have their own individual schedules.  I have found that some weeks I am very busy and I don’t get to my assignments until Sunday night.  By this time I have missed a discussion or two and even missed out on analyzing someone else’s work.  This is much easier in traditional teaching where keeping the students together at the same pace is not a problem because you see the students every day.
