Week 6 Learning Activity 1 – Online Assessment

In my online course called Science of Exercise there are strictly only multiple choice exams.  The exams are aligned with the learning outcomes however they are not assessing any deep knowledge that I have acquired based on the fact that all exams are multiple choice.  If we are talking of Bloom’s Taxonomy, I am only being assessed on my “Knowledge” level and what information that I have just learned and can regurgitate.  Worse yet, I can have the course opened up on two different windows and look for answers on one screen while doing the test on the other.  All the answers I can easily find easily by searching in Google or by simply looking at the course material which has the answers to all my test questions.

I would like to do an online assessment where I have my students write a question for another student to answer.  They have to answer their own question also, so they are able to assist with any problems that may result.  This would be considered a formative evaluation and give me a good idea if they understood the connection between voltage, current and resistance.  The students are to use the following site:  https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/circuit-construction-kit-dc  which is an online circuit kit.  They are to write a question that involves setting up a series circuit, a battery of certain voltage and at least 3 resistors.  Once circuit has been set up, they will be asked to find voltage, current and total resistance as well as show how this relationship works mathematically.   They can also come up with a  second question, but this time involves a parallel circuit.  The rationale for this type of formative assessment is that it is directly connected to my learning outcome of understanding the relationship between voltage, current and resistance.  It involves creating a circuit, which enables them to have a “hands on” learning experience.  The math part works well because if you click on the various elements of the circuit, numbers are given for each part so students are able to check their math calculations.  Students also find this circuit kit enjoyable to use because it mimics the reality of what’s going on in much of the electronic equipment they may be using.
