Week 5 Learning Activity 2 – Situational Factors

SITUATIONAL FACTORS TO CONSIDER
1. Specific Context of the Teaching/Learning Situation

The lesson I will be creating is on Ohm’s Law and the connection between voltage, current and resistance.  There are 33 grade 9 students in the class.  The course will be delivered in the classroom and the science lab.  The students will be setting up circuits so they will need a large space.

2. General Context of the Learning Situation

This is part of the required learning for grade 9 students in Alberta.

3. Nature of the Subject

The subject is a combination of theoretical and practical and it deals primarily with convergent thinking.  There are no controversies within this subject as it is based on an equation that has been around since early 1800s.

4. Characteristics of the Learners

Learners come from mostly middle class families.  They have some prior experience in this subject matter from previous grades.  It also deals with concepts and terminology that they would come into contact with in their daily lives.  Their learning goals are quite varied based on their own or their parents expectations.  As far a learning styles, there would be a mix, but a majority would be visual learners.

5. Characteristics of the Teacher

The teacher has a knowledge of the subject matter an it would be considered a strength because he has taught it many times before.

    Would you allow students to work in groups? I also saw your exam component on your next post. Would this be an open book exam or any other accommodations for students needing more help? I think it is very relevant in today’s society! I work with kids in the apprenticeship program and they find success in science in areas like this!

      I would definitely let them work in small groups and as for the exam I generally always have two versions. One regular and one modified, where the modified one is shorter and multiple choice questions might have 3 alternatives instead of 4.
